Many people wonder about what their purpose is in life. It is a consideration that one might ponder when they are at a crossroads in life. During times of transition, we reflect about longer-term issues because the decisions we make often have ramifications years down the road.
How might one go about discovering their reason for being?
One way is to do a timeline of your life. On the line you put markers for key events…graduations, marriage, jobs, birth of children, moving, promotions, and other significant events will come to mind. Along that line mark special times when you felt energized by something. It might be a family event, project at work, volunteer opportunity….anything that changed your energy level in a positive way.
When our energy level rises we feel passionate about what we are doing. It is an exhilarating experience. Go back and look at those times and write down everything you can think of that made that time so uplifting. As you look at these times in your life when you were at the “mountain top,” what do you notice? What themes run through these various situations? After reflection, journaling, talking to loved ones you might discover a common thread. This might be one indicator pointing towards a purpose in life.
There are many other tools to use to get you closer to this discovery. It’s a formidable task, but one well worth the effort. When we are operating at a high level of consciousness we come alive, we are excited about what we are doing, passionate about our efforts.
Wouldn’t this be an exciting journey to embark on?
